Going to the Chapel, and We're Gonna Get Married . . .

Last summer, on July 31, the event of the season was the wedding of Elizabeth and Jonathan.  Almost exactly one year later, on July 18, Elizabeth's best friend, Sarah, got married to Scott.  So, to Virginia we went to participate in the festivities.  We couldn't miss the wedding of my best friend's daughter, who is my daughter's best friend.

The very elegant Sarah King.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott King's first dance.  Scott played football at
Virginia Tech and Sarah is a dance major at Radford.

Home Improvements

One of the cons of living in a subdivision with a homeowners association is making sure we follow the rules (which I sometimes, don't even know!).  Spring 2008, we received, along with many other homeowners, a notice that we needed to replace the mulch or pine straw in our islands.  Who knew it had to be freshened!?  So we dutifully had new bark put down.  Fast forward to this spring.  We knew the notice was coming.  (Actually the notice we received was that we had too many weeds in the lawn.  Sigh.)  But before they could notify us, we were blessed with free wood chips!  Several trees across the street in the woodsy part of the common area had died over the winter and needed to come down.  When the guys came out to do the job, Jeff noticed the sign on the truck door, "Ask us about Free Chips."  So he did!  They had not promised the chips to anyone yet, so dumped the whole truck load on our side yard in the pine straw.  Jeff spent days transporting them by wheelbarrow to our beds and islands.  That, along with the new trees and plants we planted, is helping the yard get shaped up!

We transplanted these from the front yard to the back yard.  We planted hosta and gardenias in their place in the front.
Since we live on a lake, we are constantly looking out for snakes!  I have seen a few swimming in the lake, but so far, not any in our yard.  A neighbor said she tried running over what she thought was a rattlesnake, that went into our yard when she missed him!  So I wasn't surprised when I was walking the dog one day, when Cleo was sniffing like crazy beside our front porch.  I stepped closer to see what was there, but quickly stepped back again!  It wasn't a live snake, not even a whole snake, just his skin.  But he shed it not three feet from our front door!

Independence Day!

Holidays are family affairs, especially the 4th of July!  Since it lands smack in the middle of the summer, everyone is ready for time off to celebrate.  And when I say "everyone", I mean "everyone!"  I think all of North Georgia was at Lake Acworth this year!  We had reserved a table on the lake close to the bandstand.  Thankfully it was on the perimeter of the collection of tables so we could extend our territory to include all thirteen of us!  (me, Jeff, Jessica, Casey, Samuel, Anna, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Jayne, Jaca, Jenna, Billy and Ellen)  We picnicked with all the traditional foods--fried chicken, pasta salad, watermelon, strawberries and banana pudding.

Oh, did I say lemonade?
We all wore our red, white and blue.
Waiting on fireworks.
Even Anna was dressed for the occasion.
Until the sun got lower in the sky, we were all melting.
Samuel was keeping cool by sucking on ice.
Don't we look patriotic?
Billy and Ellen are relaxing.  As a matter of fact, Ellen relax so much,
she actually fell asleep.

Tea Party

This was not your typical tea party, with little sandwiches and biscuits.  This one is akin to the Boston Tea Party a couple hundred years ago.  We didn't dump any tea into the Chattahoochee River, but the sentiment is the same.  Many Americans are protesting the amount of taxes we pay and the tax system in general.  We are ready for change!  There were about 6000 people in attendance, all with the same opinion--we are Taxed Enough Already!
